THE FIRST RESIDENTS OF MARION COUNTY, FLORIDA WERE LIKELY THE TIMUCUA INDIANS, WHO OCCUPIED WHAT THEY CALLED "OCALI" IN THE VICINITY OF PRESENT-DAY OCALA. In the mid-sixteenth century, Hernando de Soto of Spain reportedly established a temporary campsite in North Central Florida among a group of Native Americans.

In 1846 Ocala became the county seat of newly formed Marion County (honoring General Francis Marion). By 1847 settlers constructed a courthouse on the square, the post office moved to Ocala, and a weekly newspaper was established.

Settlement. After acquisition of the Florida territory by the United States in the 1820s, Marion County was created in 1844 from portions of Alachua, Mosquito (Orange), and Hillsborough counties. Until 1853, Marion County included most of what are now Lake and Sumter counties.
