Is Evan Williams owned by Jack Daniel's? ›

Evan Williams is a brand of Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey bottled in Bardstown, Kentucky, by the Heaven Hill company.

Today, Evan Williams is the second largest selling Kentucky Straight Bourbon whiskey in the U.S. and the world, distilled just a few blocks from the site where Evan himself built his distillery.

Evan Williams is cheaper than Jack, Jim, and almost every other bottom-shelf American whiskey. And at 86 proof, it has a higher-than-average ABV. Yet despite the high proof and low price, Evan still delivers those vanilla, oak notes on the nose and palate.

Bourbon does not expire, as long as it remains unopened. A correctly stored bottle can last decades as long as it's kept away from heat and light. If you have an opened bottle of bourbon its shelf life is about 3-6 months before it will start to lose quality and flavor.

A bourbon must be distilled at no more than 160 proof, or 80% alcohol by volume. Jack is well under that. It comes over the still at 140 proof, or 70% alcohol.

Placed side by side, Jack Daniels emerges as the clear standout, boasting a richer sweetness and greater depth on the palate, with cherry and vanilla notes accentuated in comparison to Evan Williams.

Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond is aged under government supervision and meeting the exact requirements for a Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon. It has all the kick you expect—but still goes down smooth.

Even in our blind tasting, the difference between the Jim Beam and the Evan Williams is noticeable. The Evan Williams is more bourbon-y, meaning that it has the expected textbook bourbon notes that I was looking for with toasted wood and vanilla.

While whiskey doesn't necessarily expire, it does start to lose flavor and elements after it is opened. An unopened bottle of whiskey will last indefinitely if stored in proper condition. After opening a bottle of whiskey, you have as long as two years or as few as six months or less to drink it before it goes bad.
