Dodoma Residents Urged to Embrace and Support People with Disabilities: A Call for Respect and Awareness
DODOMA: In a powerful call to action, residents of DODOMA are being urged to embrace and support people with disabilities, fostering a culture of respect and understanding. The Foundation for Disabilities Hope, a dedicated organization advocating for the rights and welfare of individuals with disabilities, has issued a statement emphasizing the importance of refraining from using derogatory language that can cause psychological and emotional harm.
Mr. Mwamrisho Kasule, an official from the Foundation, expressed deep concern over the negative attitudes prevalent in society. He highlighted that the use of derogatory names and stigmatizing language contributes to discrimination and perpetuates harmful stereotypes against people with disabilities. Mr. Kasule emphasized that such language can have a profound impact on how we treat others, especially those living with disabilities.
He further explained that when individuals are labeled with names that highlight their impairments or weaknesses, it can significantly damage their self-esteem and the way they perceive themselves within the community. Mr. Kasule also drew attention to Tanzania's commitment to protecting the rights of people with disabilities, including those with albinism and visual impairments. He stressed that their rights must be respected, and they should have equal opportunities in society.
Citing the 2022 Population and Housing Census, Mr. Kasule revealed that 11.2% of Tanzanians live with some form of disability, an increase from 9.3% in the 2012 census. This rise underscores the urgent need for heightened awareness and inclusion. Ms. Irene Julias, another official from the same organization, shared the foundation's ongoing efforts to engage communities in changing perceptions and discouraging the use of demeaning language towards people with disabilities.
She stated, 'Our mission is to promote understanding, respect, and inclusivity, enabling people with disabilities to live with dignity and be recognized for their abilities, not their limitations.' This call to action aims to foster a more compassionate and supportive environment, ensuring that people with disabilities are valued and empowered in their communities.
