The Running Man (2025) Review: Edgar Wright's Dazzling Yet Frustrating Remake! (2025)

The Running Man: A Mixed Bag of Thrills and Frustrations

In a world where desperation knows no bounds, we find Ben Richards, played by the talented Glen Powell, making a daring decision to participate in the infamous game show, The Running Man. This show, a twisted take on reality TV, promises a thrilling chase across the vast American landscape, with Richards being hunted by a ruthless army of goons and professional killers. But here's the catch: the viewing public is incentivized with huge cash rewards for selling out Richards to the network behind this macabre spectacle.

As a child of the 80s, I hold a special place in my heart for the original Running Man movie. So, when I heard about Edgar Wright's adaptation, my excitement knew no bounds. However, my enthusiasm took a hit when I realized that this new version, while faithful to the novel, lacked the incendiary impact of its predecessor. Wright, a director known for his brilliance, delivers a visually stunning experience, but the film struggles to find its satirical footing.

The satire, a key element, falls flat. The 80s film succeeded in skewering the cheesy game shows and pop culture of its time, but this new take fails to convince us that such a premise would be embraced in today's world. It feels like a dystopia straight out of the 80s, missing the mark on potential targets like AI, social media, and tech oligarchs.

Josh Brolin, as the film's antagonist Killian, delivers a polished performance, but he lacks the screen time needed to truly embody the role. The film's episodic nature, with Powell's Richards moving from ally to ally, further dilutes the impact. Many big names, like William H. Macy, are underutilized.

Glen Powell, however, shines as the action star. His wiry physique and reliance on disguises and ingenuity make for a unique hero, a far cry from the Arnold mold. Yet, his tough-guy persona feels forced at times, almost trying too hard to convince us of his action hero status.

Despite its flaws, The Running Man delivers some truly breathtaking sequences. The car chase, with Powell trapped in a trunk, is a testament to the film's creativity. The finale, aboard a network jet, is a violent thrill ride. Lee Pace, as the main Hunter, steals the show with his presence and gravitas, potentially carrying an entire action film on his own. Michael Cera, as a revolutionary zine publisher, understands the satirical tone better than anyone else, adding a unique layer to the film.

But here's where it gets controversial: the final act. It feels rushed, with Emilia Jones' character undergoing a sudden and abrupt change, leaving viewers wondering if crucial scenes were cut. The finale, anticlimactic and sped through, leaves a bitter taste.

Despite my criticisms, I must admit that Wright's Running Man is a must-see. It's a film that divides opinions, and I found myself enjoying it, despite its flaws. Wright's direction is impeccable, and the spectacle is undeniable. It might not have lived up to my expectations, but it's a film that will leave a lasting impression.

I watched it with six others, and the reactions were divided. Three loved it, three shared my sentiments, and none hated it. What do you think? Will you give The Running Man a chance, or is it a pass for you? Let's discuss in the comments and share our thoughts on this divisive film!
