thousands of weed worshipers flocked to san francisco for an unofficial but still spirited version of for 20. good evening. on this saturday, i'm cristina rendon. this year's annual pilgrimage to golden gate park drew a big crowd, but we see people celebrating across the country. cannabis enthusiasts set up parties across the state to celebrate this tradition that started right here in the bay area. ktvu zac sos joins us live from oakland tonight after speaking with crowds flocking to san francisco's hippie hill for a party that was a little smaller than usual this year. zach. >> yeah, that's right. perhaps not the gigantic cloud of marijuana smoke we're accustomed to seeing at the event, but still prolific nonetheless. those 420 devotees coming out despite an organized entertainment program for the event. many telling me actually,

one or more drugs in their systems, and it was a busy day for marijuana dispensaries in northern california. this was the scene this morning in sacramento, a long line outside main stage cannabis dispensary. guests were eagerly waiting to take advantage of the shop's 420 product specials. one woman says she got up bright and early to get ahead of the line, but she wasn't the only one with that idea. >> i've been here since 830 this morning, and we still got a good 3545 people in front of us, but it's to me, it's worth it. >> according to data from the us census bureau, california was by far the top earning state for excise sales tax revenue on marijuana in just the fourth quarter of 2023 alone, california collected almost $161 million. today is the first for 20 days since maryland launched its recreational marijuana market. while weed lovers there are celebrating being people in surrounding washington, d.c. and virginia are being left out. congress blocked d.c. from

creating a legalized market. virginia governor glenn youngkin vetoed a bill which would have allowed recreational retail sales to begin next year. researchers at desa global solutions track state's rapidly changing marijuana laws. they say recreational pot is now legal. in 23 states and the u.s. territory of guam. some states allow limited use of marijuana, such as for medicinal purposes. diesel global solutions again, we say it tracks those those performances because it performs drug tests and background screens for businesses making new hires. a developing story in monroe county, michigan, where two young children were killed today and 15 people injured when a car crashed into a kids birthday party. this was at a boat club in berlin township, about 30 miles south of detroit. law enforcement reports. the woman driving the car was intoxicated. the vehicle crashed through a wall and stopped about 25ft into the building. the boy killed in the accident was five

years old, and his sister eight years old. >> the 66 year old female driver of the vehicle excuse me, who will not be identified at this time, has been taken into police custody for operating while intoxicated, causing death. and she's lodged at the monroe county jail. additional criminal charges will likely be brought against the driver as the investigation proceeds. >> the scene of the crash was described by first responders as, quote, extremely chaotic, with a high level of emotions among victims and witnesses. the oakland police department is mourning the loss of an officer who was critically injured on duty almost six years ago. the department says. officer jordan wingate died today surrounded by his family, including his father, a retired oakland police captain. his law enforcement career began as an opd cadet. in 2013. he joined the force in 2017 and was named rookie of the year in 2018 by the oakland police officers association.

police say wingate, just 22 at the time, was responding to a suspicious person near the port of oakland back in 2018 when he crashed into a car and then careened into a parked big rig. officer wingate is the 55th oakland police officer to die in the line of duty. the department says funeral plans will be shared once they're finalized. this is the sellout of america today. >> when we had members of congress in there waving the ukrainian flag on the united states house of representatives floor, while we're doing nothing to secure our border. >> well, she stopped short of promising to attempt to remove house speaker mike johnson from his leadership role, but georgia representative marjorie taylor greene says the speaker is a, quote, lame duck tonight. her description of the speaker came after today's vote in the house to approve a $95 billion package of funding for ukraine, israel and other us allies. fox's chad pergram has the speaker's reaction to today's vote and threats coming from people in

thanking the bipartisan, bipartisan coalition of lawmakers who supported the bill. he issued a statement urging congress to get the bill to his desk quickly so that he can sign it and quote, send weapons and equipment to ukraine to meet their urgent battlefield needs. wartime aid was not the only issue congress voted on today. the house voted overwhelmingly to approve a bill that included a provision to force tiktok's chinese owner bytedance to sell the company to a us owned company within a year, or see the app removed from stores in the u.s, users could still access the app from other sources. the senate is expected to vote on that on tuesday. oakland firefighters today responded to an early morning fire near the fruitvale bart station. the fire was reported at about five this morning at 40th and san leandro streets, a fire department spokesperson says the fire started in an rv and spread to a building, a housing commercial cannabis cultivation business. it took about an hour for

the north bay to expect long delays and detours this weekend due to a closure on highway 37. >> video captured late last night gives you a sense of that operation. it involves a large construction crew, bright lights have been brought in to help them work in the dark. caltrans is urging drivers to be prepared, saying this closure will impact thousands of people over the entire weekend. >> we know the detour is going to be a long one. it is over 45 miles and we have an expectancy between an hour of two hours of traffic time. so we really do urge the public and the whole bay area to plan ahead if you can avoid the area as much as possible, but those that have to commute, please check out our caltrans quick map for the latest updates. this portion of westbound highway 37 is scheduled to remain closed until 4:00 monday morning. >> this same stretch of the highway will close again next weekend. the eastbound direction of highway 37 will be closed during the first and second weekends of may. winter like

conditions just will not quit. in denver, heavy snow fell in the city and surrounding areas today. conditions were severe enough last night to postpone last night's colorado rockies game against the seattle mariners to tomorrow. okay, now we're going to bring in meteorologist mark tamayo, who is tracking conditions there. and closer to home. hi, mark. >> hi there. christina. yeah. in fact, denver right now still reporting some light snowfall. they'll be talking about some dense fog tomorrow, but the snowfall should be out of that portion of colorado. as we head into sunday. for us, we have the complete opposite. no snow, no rain. we just have lots of sunshine. and in fact, a warmer temperatures for your sunday. these are the highs from this afternoon. san francisco 62, hayward 69. and as you can see some mid to upper 70s well inland. we're probably going have a few more 80s for tomorrow afternoon because everybody should be a little bit warmer. some patchy morning fog, mostly sunny. it's a nice forecast. we'll start out the day in the upper 40s to the 50s, and then by the 4:00 hour around 63 to 83 degrees. as you can see on the satellite, we have a fog bank

out here in the pacific. so we could have a few patches redevelop near the coastline and right around portions of the bay. but in terms of active weather, the storm track, it's out here in the pacific. you can see the weakening band, in fact, approaching the pacific northwest, producing some rain showers up there. but we have an area of high pressure keeping us dry and also relatively mild. here is our live camera tonight, looking out toward the bay bridge. you can see the salesforce tower and the bay and over san francisco. and current numbers have cooled off into the 50s and the 60s. concord right now 62, san jose checking in 61. we'll start out tomorrow morning with partly cloudy skies, some patchy fog and the coolest locations in the upper 40s but widespread 50s. to start things off for tomorrow. so here is the forecast model. as you can see, about 7:00. and then as we put this into motion, those colors begin to brighten up. and these colors represent a nice day out there. maybe a few high clouds drifting overhead throughout the day, but there's the eventual temperature range from around 63 all the way to 83 degrees. so most areas tomorrow should be a little bit warmer. this pattern

to get away from law enforcement, help lead to an arrest in the east bay. they say 18 year-old terrence evans was arrested in oakland wednesday after taking off in a suspected stolen vehicle in san lorenzo.

these are images taken from the air as alameda sheriff's deputies caught up with him. they say deputies managed to dart the vehicle with tracking technology that allowed investigators to keep up with the vehicle without engaging in a potentially dangerous pursuit. evans has been charged with reckless driving and resisting storms, forced former president donald trump to cancel a campaign rally in north carolina today. he hoped to get some campaigning in before the start of his criminal hush money trial. fox's madeline rivera reports. opening statements are set for monday. >> the jury of seven men and five women include a software engineer, an english teacher and an investment banker. six alternate jurors will step in if any of the 12 drop out. emotions ran high during the week, with some prospective jurors expressing anxiety, others breaking down in tears. the trial is moving forward despite another attempt by trump's team to delay as he tries to move the case out of manhattan. that motion was denied. >> the trial starts on monday, which is long before a lot of

explosion that happened overnight at the kalsu military base belonging to a coalition of iran allied militias. the group is also known as the popular mobilization forces. the blast killed one person and injured eight others. militia officials first blamed the explosion on us forces, describing it as an airstrike. the base used to be owned by the united states. it was handed over to the iraqi military in 2011. u.s. central command has denied responsibility for the airstrike. smoke could be seen rising over the gaza strip today, fighting in the war torn region included an israeli airstrike that killed at least nine palestinians, including six children. israel has vowed to push a ground offensive into rafah. that's the region where more than half of gaza's population is believed to be right now. most people there were displaced by fighting elsewhere. thousands of protesters showed up in tel aviv

against the other in the 12 race event. it's the first time the san francisco yacht club has hosted the male dominant optimist races in eight years. there are definitely more boys in this sport, but i do have a lot of very close girlfriends on the water. >> whenever girls come into the sport, it's really nice because we all make really good friendships and we all just work together and we compete against each other and it's really fun time. >> it's also a tough time. each sailor works the sail and rudder simultaneously in the eight foot boat, navigating a trapezoid course near the berkeley circle, about a mile from the shore of the city of the same name. challenging sea conditions necessitate the use of bailers to keep water out of the boat and keep the boat afloat. >> the winds are insane. the current is intense, the water is cold, the waves are nuts. >> the regatta committee member, stone mellett, says overcoming such hardships at sea forges toughness and character. >> it's just the a normal thing

fox to steve nielsen, had a chance to see how crews trained to fight flames from the air. what we're witnessing today is one of the most precise ways to fight a wildfire from the sky. >> this single engine plane actually has the tank directly underneath the pilot, and when it's full at, nearly doubles the weight of the tanker. all day, every day for the last few weeks , these planes have gone up and down this buckeye airstrip training. these are single engine planes with precision attacks. >> we fly lower a little more accurate. obviously a much smaller load of retardant, but they'll string sometimes 6 or 8 airplanes together. so you're getting it one after the other. >> before western pilot service trains in the air, they head to

average. there is another cooldown expected in the five day forecast. you'll see that coming up in just a little bit, but in terms of in fact, the cooldown headed our way, it's not showing up just yet, but look at the upper level wind pattern. we'll take this into tuesday and into wednesday. we're watching this system out here in the pacific, and you'll notice by midweek this will send in some clouds. and then by thursday, duffy, some more clouds. and by thursday night into friday, maybe some shower chances back in the picture. so you can see this forecast model is bringing in some rain, possibly into northern california by friday for us right now though, we have a dry pattern, but still some patchy fog that could be forming. it could be a factor near portions of the coastline. first thing tomorrow morning. here is the satellite. it is fairly quiet. there is a weak system up here up in the pacific northwest, but for us right now we have a quiet weather pattern and a nice one as well. another one for your sunday take a look at the numbers out there for the 10:00 hour. san jose right now 61, san francisco 56 and some 50s for novato and napa. our live camera above san francisco. mostly

clear skies. it's nice. it's a nice saturday night, as you can see, looking out toward the bay bridge and the overnight temperatures. we are expecting this partly cloudy skies, some patchy fog. coolest locations. not incredibly cold, but still upper 40s to the lower 50s. so here's the weather setup. this area of high pressure has been rebuilding. it's going to stick around for your sunday and into monday. so it is a mild to warm forecast. lots of 70s the warmest locations could be approaching the lower 80s, especially for tomorrow, and then here's the change. by midweek, wednesday and thursday we're watching out for this system approaching our coastline. this will definitely send in more clouds and also that cool down. and then we'll keep an eye on those shower chances. there could be some drizzle as early as wednesday, but maybe some shower chances by thursday or friday. here is the forecast model. this is for your sunday. we're looking okay as we take this into monday. this particular update is bringing in some patchy fog near portions of the coastline and a few high clouds out there as well, but away from the shoreline. we are expecting another warm day for your monday, and that's what we

in. dozens of them kept flames contained to the roof and attic. no one was hurt. investigators say embers from the lodge's large stone fireplace apparently ignited the roof. flames spread from there while guests are being welcomed back tomorrow, repair crews will be on the property working to restore the 1937 structure. the american red cross today partnered with the oakland fire department for a fire safety event. those two agencies are working with dozens of volunteers who are going door to door to install free smoke alarms in oakland. it's part of an annual event called the sound of the alarm. this year, it took place in an oakland neighborhood near partridge avenue, which was the scene of a deadly house fire last december. >> this is a part of our signature campaign, sound the alarm our home fire campaign to prepare folks for home fires. so we install free smoke detectors. we've got appointments today so folks know we're coming, and we'll talk about home fire safety, the do's and don'ts, talking about two minutes to get out of your home, having two exits to get out of your home. we'll also talk about earthquakes because that's also
