Tony Vitello's MLB Journey: Mentored by Giants Icons Bruce Bochy and Dusty Baker (2025)

How Tony Vitello's Mentors, Bruce Bochy and Dusty Baker, Are Guiding Him Through His New Role with the Giants

Tony Vitello is navigating his first MLB position with the Giants, and he's got the perfect guides to help him through this new chapter in San Francisco. With former Giants managers and franchise legends Bruce Bochy and Dusty Baker in advisory roles, Vitello is already reaping the benefits of their wisdom.

"Sometimes, this job feels like being lost in a forest, but talking to these guys gives you a sense of security and confidence. It's like having a force field or a Captain America shield to help you with any challenge," Vitello shared in an exclusive interview with John Shea of The San Francisco Standard. "Their insights are invaluable, and you can trust everything they say."

However, some might question Vitello's lack of major league experience. He became the first manager in MLB history to be hired directly from the college ranks without any professional baseball experience. Over the last two decades, he worked in college baseball, serving as an assistant at Missouri, TCU, and Arkansas before becoming Tennessee's coach in 2017.

During his eight seasons with the Volunteers, Vitello achieved a remarkable 341-131 record, securing two SEC regular-season and tournament titles. He also led the team to their first national championship in 2024.

Despite his impressive college career, the Giants' decision to hire Vitello might seem risky. But with Bochy and Baker's guidance, his "inexperience" might not be a concern after all.

Bochy managed the Giants for 13 seasons, from 2007 to 2019, leading the team to three World Series victories. Baker, after retiring as a player, served as the Giants' manager from 1993 to 2002, earning the NL Manager of the Year award three times and winning the 2022 World Series with the Houston Astros.

With the Giants facing a disappointing 2025 campaign and parting ways with Bob Melvin, all eyes are on Vitello to bring winning baseball back to the Bay Area. The Giants Talk Podcast is a great resource to stay updated on the team's progress.
