According to a comprehensive study by the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS), a significant gap is emerging. Young talent is opting for careers in healthcare and assistance, moving away from IT and certain engineering fields.
But here's where it gets controversial: the tech sector is facing a crisis of confidence. The shadow of artificial intelligence looms large, with industry leaders predicting a future where programming skills might become obsolete. This, coupled with the expectation that tech roles will be highly automated, creates an uncertain future for aspiring engineers.
On top of that, the once-stable tech industry is now experiencing labor instability. Mass redundancies and high staff turnover have tarnished the image of these companies, which were once seen as stable and opportunity-rich. This desire for economic security is a key concern for Generation Z, as highlighted by a survey conducted by What's The Big Data.
Generation Z's priorities are shifting. Data from Networks Trends reveals that 76% of students prioritize a stable career over other factors like company location, reputation, or high salaries. This generation is seeking security and meaning in their professional lives.
And this is the part most people miss: the fear of burnout is a major concern. Half of the surveyed students expressed worries about joining a toxic work environment, fearing burnout and obstacles to their career growth. As a result, the appeal of large tech companies, which no longer guarantee idyllic work environments, is waning.
The numbers don't lie: Google's desirability among students has dropped from 4th place in 2022 to 7th in 2024, according to the NSHSS study. Amazon and Apple have also seen a decline, and SpaceX's fall from 9th to 22nd place is particularly notable.
